21.02.2009: Status - Patch - Pre-Orders
Neue Infos von Tasos
Zitat:
Today a substantial patch was applied to the game. We’ve also opened up the beta information forums where you can read the newly released patch notes.
These patch notes, among other things, explain the basics of the conquest system. We’ve been working hard on the game as you can see by the volume of this update, we’ve already spoken of our commitment to supporting the game and that’s what we’ll continue doing. Things are looking good for launch; the game has been very stable, even though server and client are still in debug mode.
We feel we should explain what’s happening with the pre-ordering even though it hasn’t been officially opened yet: Yesterday we gave the beta testers some lead time to the pre-order. This was offered not only as a courtesy but also in order to get reports on any problems before releasing to the public. Since the pre-order link leaked out, our system has been overrun by players from all over the world trying to pre-order at the same time.
Even though areas like Asia are excluded from this release, they remain major contributors to the heavy server load. This load is many times above our highest estimate and as a result the system has been very slow. We’ve been correcting the few issues that have surfaced while in the process of increasing our web server capacity-yet again.
We apologize for these problems, we have people working on this around the clock and should have it fixed by tomorrow. We're disabling the pre-orders until then. Even though many persistent people have managed to pre-order successfully, it's just not a good user experience. We’ll post the pre-order information and resume taking pre-orders as soon as we're back up tomorrow.
Clarification: I just noticed it's after 5 am here. By tomorrow I guess I mean later today Saturday, Feb 21.
"I doubt that I’ll write any more previews – so I’ll take the opportunity to say that it’s been a great pleasure to share what information I could with you"
29.01.2009: Preview 8 von Gianna (TheNoob-Comics)
"I'm in love with this game! IN LOVE!"
Forums had been down due to several DDOS attacks. Since it became an issue, we took the forums down and have taken all appropriate measures to make a recurrence less likely. The game servers have not been affected.
The trial faced some issues during the initial stress test when the volume of the invitees taxed the patching and the login system. This was to be expected and it's the nature of a stress test.
15.01.2009: Darkfall Releaseinfo von Tasos
We know that the community has been speculating and wondering about the Darkfall release for some time. We haven’t replied until now because there were several complex issues to plan and work out. We also needed to get authorization before we could proceed with this official announcement:
Starting on January 22nd there will be a Darkfall trial with the distribution of the release candidate client allowing thousands of players to sample the game for free, help us stress test our servers and test the final features of the game.
It’s important to understand that there are well over 200 thousand applications by players wanting to get into Darkfall. This number makes it unrealistic to distribute the client and to open up our servers to everyone. We’ll try to accommodate as many players as are possible for us to manage at this stage. Even so, the demand exceeds our current capacity. Interest in Darkfall has surpassed all our expectations to the point that we may need to manage our release differently.
The date of the Darkfall European commercial release has been pushed back to February 25th, 2009. A pre-order will be made available mid-February. The pre-orders will get priority for early access to the game. The pre-orders will also get priority for the game launch if we have to go to a staged release. We’ll go to a staged release only in the case we have more demand than we can handle properly, and until we can upgrade our capacity. The pre-orders are necessary so that we can have some measure of the demand.
The reasons for the new release date follow:
- At this stage, everything is connected: Hundreds of elements need to come together. When one thing falls behind, everything else tends to follow.
- Demand for Darkfall at launch could be much higher than expected. If this is the case, we need a different process to better handle the demand.
- Darkfall’s partners (distribution, billing, account management, support, etc.) entered into the game at a late date and we needed more time than expected to integrate properly.
- We fell behind on a couple of weeks of beta testing progress and we need to make this time up. We need more playtesting data on several features we haven’t had much chance to test externally.
- We’ll use this extra time to implement updates based on tester feedback and also make some enhancements we were saving for after release.
- We want as many players as possible in the game before the launch and we haven’t had the chance to stress test our servers with live players yet.
- We underestimated the effect the holidays would have on our preparations. While we worked through them, the world around us seemed to stop.
- We don’t want to rush things more than needed. An extra month may not seem like a lot of time, but it’s enough to allow us to take care of any compounded delays.
Our hope for Darkfall is to have a good game with a tight player base that we can nurture and steadily build up. Hype surrounding Darkfall is huge right now, despite our best efforts. We’re not sure how this will translate on launch day but we have to make allowances for the possibility that demand could be more than we anticipate.
Announcements will follow with more information on Darkfall pricing, pre-ordering information, North American player access, and system specifications.

24.12.2008: Happy Holidays from Tasos
Happy Holidays from the Darkfall Team
We’re obviously working through the holidays, but we’ve scattered some. We’ll come back to you with a proper status report as soon as possible, so please excuse the almost telegraphic post today:
For now, beta is progressing satisfactorily; we’re adding new people in regular batches almost daily. There are no major issues to report, a couple of recent patches turned out a bit shaky but we quickly fixed that. We’re also fighting with the business end of things getting everything ready for the publishing. Support, billing, and account management are all coming together. Our server deployment is just about complete. A new website is under development and we hope it will be finished in time for the launch.
If there appears to be a lack of updates, we haven’t been idle in that department. We have been doing quite a few interviews; I believe one at curse.com is out today, and several more to follow. I try to answer every question asked one way or another. Time is very limited but we’re doing all we can. Gianna’s beta previews at The Noob are not meant to replace our updates, but they are a very accurate representation of what’s going on in the beta. We offer very little, if any feedback or guidance in her previews, more along the lines of pointing out known issues, or things that are placeholders and about to be replaced by the real deal. She’s also a person who will call them as she sees them and this was our understanding when we asked her to do this.
I want to thank the community, we don’t do it often enough but the sentiment is always there. You guys have been great, your support and your feedback has been invaluable.
On behalf of the entire Darkfall team, I’d like to wish everyone Happy Holidays.

Zitat:
Catching you up with our activities to date - in this post a brief recap of our activities surrounding the first official presentation for Darkfall during the Athens Digital Week.
The Darkfall information we’ve been giving out lately has been targeting civilians. While there have been a few interviews, on a variety of local (Greek) and fewer international media, there is really nothing new. We’ve shown about 10 different version of the Darkfall trailer, we’ve given a few presentations about the game, there are some Darkfall ads out there, and more waiting to be deployed, a couple of local television presentations etc. but it’s the general information that people need to be introduced to the game.
You probably already saw Shaar’s update on the Athens Digital Week activities. He did a good job giving the information about what all happened there, but here’s the official take on things:
The presentation didn’t contain much new information. It was meant for a general audience. The video shown was a shorter version of the Darkfall trailer. We played the game live on the stage during the presentation for about 20 minutes and we stopped when the internet went out.
The announcement during ADW was that the open beta phase is scheduled to end early in December. More importantly this means that the game will be ready to release at that point. Marketing consideration kept us from just announcing a release date. The game will be ready for release, and the launch may follow directly, or shortly after, depending on the marketing landscape at the time. Obviously the earlier the better for us, but there are a lot of things needing coordination for the launch, internal and external. So our side of things (meaning the development end) will be ready.
Some general information on the Athens Digital Week activities because a lot of people were asking: We organized the entire gaming section, mainly to support publicity for Darkfall’s first official presentation. There was an international Quake 3 and Warcraft 3 event, the ESWC Masters of Athens, where the best professional players in the world competed for the top spots. It was nice to know that most of them knew about Darkfall and a few were waiting for it to come out. Then we held the World Cyber Games national finals, there was a large LAN set up for the public, and a bunch of game consoles with the latest Xbox 360 games. There was a concert with the symphonic orchestra of the city of Athens playing videogame themes. Last but not least we had a small game developer’s conference for game developers in Greece.
We were happy with the attendance of the event, a lot of international journalists covered ESWC Master’s of Athens and had a lot of question to ask about Darkfall, and we met a lot of fans during the Darkfall presentation, but mainly in the days following it. I was very surprised at how many people were asking about the game, and about when we would have another presentation. We didn’t know we had such a strong following in Greece. Unfortunately our time slot for the Darkfall presentation was during normal business hours and many people couldn't attend.
I’ve posted some pictures from the event in the gallery.
We’ll follow this up with a Darkfall status report within a couple of hours from this posting.
Ok now for the Darkfall community update:
As you know we’ve been conducting the first phases of the Darkfall beta, specifically the hardware configuration testing. This is where we test that Darkfall runs on most hardware configurations without problems, and we also test the absolute basics. We’ve been putting the testers through the motions: they download the client, log in, patch, create a character, enter the game and run around long enough to make sure that they’re not experiencing any weirdness and that everything is running smoothly. All this needs to be done so that in the next phases of testing a greater number of testers won’t experience any problems with the basics and so they can focus on other important testing. These have turned out to be very productive and useful testing phases. During this time we’ve addressed various hardware compatibility problems, compatibility issues with programs running simultaneously with Darkfall, we identified and corrected some patcher issues, some login server problems, and various small issues around the game world. At the same time, it’s business as usual with our internal testing.
Let me give you an idea of what’s been happening during these first testing phases: Right now, the entire Darkfall world is up on its servers. It’s being kept up most of the time. We’ve been running a methodical and functional testing environment. We started the hardware testing with the minimum of options enabled. Since then we’ve been enabling and disabling features needed to be tested. This is done so that we have the minimum noise in case something happens on the server side and we need to isolate it. We’ve been wiping characters as often as once a day, usually within 2-3 days. This is because we’re not testing character development yet, and we’ve been making some optimizations in the way that things are stored. We’ve been enabling features gradually and we’re to the point where most are enabled. Some of the things we still have deactivated are mobs outside the starting areas, most of the dungeons, most of the clan city building locations. Another thing worth mentioning is that during testing, testers have options and tools available to them that they won’t have during the retail stage of Darkfall.
Our goal during this testing phase is that the important things work perfectly as we move all the way down to the polish during the subsequent testing phases. The game had always been in a state to be run in its entirety, but this would have been a huge waste of resources and would have hindered this early testing. This is where Darkfall differs from other MMOs. We could have easilly had it running full featured if this was a railroad game, but it’s not. Darkfall is a sandbox game and there are infinite paths that players can follow. This is not some quest driven game where you could go through the motions quest after quest until you’re ready to actually play a few months down the road. You actually play Darkfall from day one. So as you understand, there’s no single path of testing. Player behavior in Darkfall varies wildly and we need to try and predict all eventualities.
This is what has been happening until today. The reason we’re mentioning all this is to familiarize those of you who aren’t in the beta already with our testing philosophy, and to catch the community up with what’s been going on.
Moving along, and we’re about two weeks behind schedule announcing this, but we’re going to start opening up the beta to more and more testers on or around November 10th to coincide with the next phases of our server deployment. We will be enabling a lot of the features we currently have disabled – as needed and dictated by our testing needs. Again I must stress that this beta period’s purpose is for us to get Darkfall ready for release so we’ve been operating under strict directives. Having said that, I can’t help mentioning, that even in this current stage of testing, the game is a lot of fun and we hope to see all of you enjoying it while helping us test during these next phases.
Thanks for reading
